colophon
Sequential Design is a website created by me, Daniel Alejandro Tapia, as a repository for my writings and my programs and other things i enjoy.
typography
currently, there are three (3) typefaces in use on Sequential Design : Valkyrie, Concourse, and Triplicate. i want to keep the design tight since i've only just now started working on my website. there are, of course, many other fonts i love.
- Valkyrie
- an old-style serif. very pleasant to look at. made by Matthew Butterick.
- Concourse
- a remake of W.A. Dwiggins's Metro, a beloved sans-serif that is what i imagine newspaper and magazine headers from the '50s and '60s to be set in. made by Matthew Butterick.
- Triplicate
- a monospaced, typewriter serif. not much to say about it ; it's beautiful. made by Matthew Butterick.
i don't actually use these typefaces very much in my daily activities. for coding, i use JuliaMono, and when i need readability, i use Hermes Maia.
themes
- ThetaSigma Dark
- the successor of the beautiful TransSide, which is what i used when i was on GNU Emacs (i use LEM now). a high-contrast dark theme whose predecessor, TransSide, was inspired by the trans flag. i still have not ported TransSide, or, to be more precise, ThetaSigma, over to LEM, so i thought i should start using it on my website to remind me of how much i liked it, as an impetus. made by Skye and released under the GPL 3.0 license.
- OS¹
- the light theme i used when i was using GNU Emacs. a soft, charming theme made from two movies, Her and Paris, Texas. made by sashimacs and released under the MIT license.
- Grey Paper
- a plain gray theme that reminds me of what i now remember Apple Macintosh computers of the early '90s looking like. made by gugod and released under the CC0 license.
i wanted to provide these three (3) themes because they cover the spectrum of major theme categories while being pleasant to look at. note : they are not the "real" themes, only ports. they have been tightened to seven (7) colors.
if none of those themes appeals to you or you just want to use your own, you can choose custom from the theme pulldown menu. there, you will find information on the seven (7) css style elements and links to my three (3) theme stylesheets for reference.
fleuron
the ❦ mark you occasionally see throughout Sequential Design is what's known as a fleuron. it's meant to serve as an explicit separator, showing when things that are next to each other are more different than simple space might suggest.
credits
currently, my site has very little content, but i'll make abundant use of unsplash, which is a site where photographers can upload photos that are free to use or for a fee they set. the social media preview image for the colophon is pink roses bloom with water drops by Tiffany Chen.

tools
this website is originally written in Markless, which is a kind of markdown. the engine is written in Common Lisp, which is one reason i chose it. the other reasons are that it looks good and is extensible. if you want to see what it looks like, you can check out the Markless guide i've made or the original one.
Sequential Design is a static site. it uses the caddy web server. caddy also seems like good software. though, not being a Go programmer myself, i can't speak to its quality. i did not hesitate to choose it since i had worked with it before and found it powerful.
logo
the favicon is an octopus made out of parens, the letter O, and a period in Noto Sans. i thought i would use an octopus since a logical abbreviation of Sequential Design is sqd which is similar to the word squid. and as lisp is my favorite family of programming languages, i used parens.
